Amber Maschke and Shayley Harris competed at the Alberta Schools' Athletic Association provincial wrestling championships over the weekend, placing third and eighth in their respective weight classes. The championships were held by Memorial Composite High School in Stony Plain.
Maschke was competing in the 57-kilogram weight class while Harris competed in the 80 kilogram plus category.
George Grant, the Spartans wrestling coach, said both wrestlers competed well, giving their best effort at an opportune time.
“Amber, unfortunately, got caught in the crossovers and got (caught) with an a very, very small mistake that the other girl capitalized on ..,. and ended up pinning her, which took her out of the running for gold. But it was a great match,” he said.
While Harris competed well, Grant said she didn't have as much luck.
“The ability just to get to provincials is impressive, but being able to place is also very tough to do,” he said.
While high school wrestling is now done for the season, club wrestling takes centre stage. Maschke will be competing in The Alberta Open this weekend in Edson.
Other big tournaments on the horizon include the Cadet Juvenile National Championships in Windsor, Ontario later this spring.
