MOUNTAIN VIEW COUNTY - Respondents have until Aug. 6 to complete an online survey currently underway regarding the possible future use of the former Campbell gravel pit in Division 6 in the north part of the municipality.
In 2019, the county placed a conservation easement onto the lands previously used for the Campbell pit, located at NE 8-33-3-5 in an effort to preserve the land and allow for continued agricultural use.
Within the conservation easement there are provisions allowing for the lands to be used as a day use area.
“Should the broader community support the concept, the area would be developed for recreational use in a manner that is supportive of the conservation values of the property to provide quiet enjoyment and environmental appreciation opportunities,” county officials said.
The survey currently underway is the “first step in engaging the public on the need or desire for a day use area and any potential features, ultimately determining if redesignation and development would be pursued.”
No motorized vehicles or camping would be permitted in the day use area.
The survey asks the respondent to rank the following potential day use area features in order of desirability: hiking trails, snowshoe trails, cross-county ski trails, wetlands viewing platform, river access, picnic areas and disc golf course.
It also asks the respondent when they would like to access the area: summer; winter; shoulder seasons (autumn and spring) or all three.
The complete survey can be found on the county’s website.
