MOUNTAIN VIEW COUNTY - County (MVC) council has given first reading to a bylaw redesignating lands west of Sundre from agricultural district to aggregate extraction/processing district.
Council also set a special council meeting and public hearing dates regarding the application.
The moves came during the recent regularly scheduled council meeting.
The 160-acre parcel involved is located about two kilometres west of Sundre, at NE 30-32-5-5 in the McDougal Flats rural community.
The applicant is Sundre Contracting Ltd., and the property owner is Harder’s trucking Ltd.
The application has been circulated to area landowners and other stakeholders.
A MVC subdivision and development technologist said, in part, that, “mining operations at the site should remain above the water table to avoid impacts to groundwater” and that the “flood hazard assessment prepared for Aspen Land Group Inc. does not in any way reduce the responsibility of the design engineer from ensuing that design meets the standards of Mountain View County design guideline and general construction specifications 2010, Alberta Environment and Parks, and any federal agencies (that) have jurisdiction.”
The Town of Sundre said while it did not have any comments on the application, it would like to be kept informed at the development permit stage, for an opportunity to provide more detail information regarding the operation.
MVC operations services said the applicant should get an analysis done for the Rge. Rd. 55 and Highway 584 intersection. “It should be determined that the turning bays on the highway are adequate for the proposed traffic from the new development.”
Several letters of objection to the application were received, with writers citing a number of concerns regarding noise, dust, air pollution, ground water contamination, traffic impacts, decreased property values, weed control measures, and impact to municipal airport.
