MOUNTAIN VIEW COUNTY - Catholic residents in the Harmattan-Zella rural neighbourhood west of Olds have voted in favour of establishing a separate school district under the Red Deer Catholic Regional Schools (RDCRS) division.
The vote took place on Sept. 23 and was spearheaded by Catholic school electors in the area. The ballot was overseen by Alberta Education.
“We had the vote and it passed, and so we are awaiting for approval from the minister (of Education),” said Rod Steeves, secretary-treasurer with RDCRS.
Once established by September 2022, the new district will see Catholic students attend Holy Trinity School in Olds, he said, noting there are currently seven eligible students in the district area.
The new district will likely be called Harmattan-Zella and will be one of many districts in the Red Deer-based RDCRS, he said.
There are no plans to build a school in the new district, he said.
“Students in that area will be eligible to be transported with our school bus system to Olds,” he said.
