Mountain View County ag board approves riparian projects funding

More than $11,000 in ALUS funding will go toward maintenance of fencing and solar projects in Mountain View County

MOUNTAIN VIEW COUNTY - The county’s agricultural service board (ASB) has approved funding for several riparian fencing projects in the municipality.

The move came by way of motion at a recent regularly scheduled board meeting, held in person and on Zoom.

One project sees 100 per cent of funding for materials for a fencing project to a maximum of $642 on the Jackson Creek at S 36-33-06-5. The 232 metre fencing project is on land used by 250 cow/calf pairs.

Another project sees the board approving 75 per cent of materials, to a maximum of $2,509, for a 680 metre fencing project on a tributary of Carstairs Creek at NE 01-30-02-5.

As well, 25 per cent of funding is approved for a solar watering system to a maximum of $1,250 on the same property, as well as $1,575 to annual payments for maintenance of the projects.

A third project approved is for 25 per cent of funding for solar watering system materials to a maximum of $1,250 on a tributary of the Dogpound Creek at NE 07-29-03-5.

The fourth project sees the board approving funding for 100 per cent of materials to a maximum of $5,000 per project for four riparian fencing projects on a property in the Kneehill Creek watershed at S 03-31-28-4.

As well 25 per cent of funding will be provided for a winter solar watering system, 100 per cent of the forage seed to a maximum of $5,000, and 25 per cent of the eco-buffer and protection fencing to a maximum of $1,375.

As well, $11,462 is provided to annual payments for the maintenance of these projects from the 2022 ALUS budget.

Made up of county councillors and appointed public members, the agricultural service board acts as an advisory body that assists council and the Minister of Agriculture in matters of mutual concern.
