New Hutterite colony dwelling units permit approved

MOUNTAIN VIEW COUNTY - County council has approved a development permit for housing units at May City Colony/Hutterite Brethren Church of Valleyview.

The move came by way of motion at the recent council meeting, with councillors deciding the matter because the property involved is designated direct control.

The property involved is located in the Division 7 Reed Ranch rural community on the east side of Rge. Rd. 273, about one kilometre north of Highway 27, at SW 10-33-27-4.

The application is for three move-on, single detached housing units in accordance with the land use bylaw.

“The dwelling units are proposed to be 1,728-square feet each that will house one family per dwelling, therefore up to three families,” administration said in a briefing note to council. 

“They are move-on dwellings that will be placed near the existing housing buildings that have already been constructed. The three new units are not intended to be permanent, and have been built on skids, as additional multi-housing buildings have been planned within the overall site plan for the colony.”

No timelines have been established for how long the new units will be in place, but “once the remaining multi-housing buildings have been constructed, the individual dwelling units will be either sold or re-purposed for storage uses.”

Administration recommended approval of the development permit application.

Division 7 councillor Jennifer Lutz said the colony is adjacent to her property and she is in support of the application.

“They are good neighbours and doing a good job,” said Lutz, who put forward the motion to approve the application.

The approval comes with a number of conditions, including that upon “issuance of a development permit and final building inspection and occupancy of the remaining multiple housing units identified in the overall site plan for the colony, residential occupancy of the three dwelling detached units shall cease, and the units shall be decommissioned or removed from the subject property.”
