Sundre RCMP give update on MD of Bighorn wildfire road closures

MOUNTAIN VIEW COUNTY - Road closures enacted Tuesday night around the wildfire evacuation zone in the Municipal District (MD) of Bighorn remain in place, Sundre RCMP said Wednesday in a noon hour update.

“Anyone seeking permission to enter this area due to livestock assistance or to access oil and gas sites are asked to phone the Municipal District of Bighorn at 403-673-3611,” police said.

Lightning is believed to have started an out-of-control wildfire about 25 kilometres west of Water Valley in the MD of Bighorn on the evening of Tuesday, July 23.

The MD issued an evacuation order just after 8 p.m. Tuesday in the north Ranchlands area, north of Highway 579 and south of Highway 734.

RCMP closed roads in the area for the wildfire response. The closures are:

• North boundary: Burnt Timber Road at the intersection with Highway 40 and the Forestry Trunk intersection of Highway 734 and Township Road 302 A at Range Road 73 A.  

East boundary: Burnt Timber Road, Township Road 303B at Range Road 64 A (Burnt Timber gas plant access closed).

South boundary: Range Road 579 to Dock Mills Road at Township Road 294 B

West boundary: Highway 40 at Harrold Creek Road (Highway 579)
