1939 – 2024

Mr. Ernest ‘Ernie’ David Goldbeck passed away peacefully on Sunday, November 17, 2024 at the age of 84 years.

Ernie was born on December 11, 1939 to Peter and Ella (nee Straub) Goldbeck at Edmonton, Alberta. His parents homesteaded near Gunn, Alberta. In 1945, they moved to a farm northwest of Red Deer. Ernie met Ilene (nee Malcolm) at Lindsay Thurber High School, and they were married on his mother’s birthday, November 26, 1957. They raised their family in Red Deer and Bowden, where they lived for over four decades.

Ernie and Ilene were both ‘horse crazy”. They spent their lives together raising and racing Thoroughbred racehorses, mainly in the Edmonton/Calgary circuit. Ernie was multi-talented: he was a farmer, a vet, a carpenter, a plumber, a mechanic, a painter, Jack-of-all- trades, and master of many. In his lifetime, he had countless jobs, but his favorite was training racehorses. He was not afraid to try new things, and he showed us how to REALLY live life.

Ernie is survived by his wife of sixty-seven years, Ilene; his daughters, Shelley Goldbeck, April Stevenson (Al); and his son, Terry (Karen); all of Red Deer County, his seven grandchildren; his eleven great grandchildren. He will also be sadly missed by his sister-in-law, Anne Goldbeck of Peace River; his four nieces and his nephew.

Ernie was predeceased by his parents, a great granddaughter and his little brother, Eric (Anne), who predeceased him by four days.

Our family is grateful for the excellent care provided by the staff at Extendicare Michener Hill, where he spent the last two years, charming and cajoling everyone he met.

A Celebration of Ernie’s Life will be held at the Paterson Community Hall, 2101 - 27 Avenue, Bowden, Alberta on Sunday, December 1, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. If desired, Memorial Donations in Ernie’s honor may be made directly to the Extendicare Michener Hill, Red Deer, Resident Council by contacting: [email protected].

Cremation to take place. Condolences, memories and photos may be shared and viewed at www.parklandfuneralhome.com. Arrangements in care of Parkland Funeral Home and Crematorium, 6287 – 67 A Street (Taylor Drive), Red Deer. 403.340.4040.
