A Bowden Institution inmate has died while in custody.
Emergency services were called on Nov. 11 and arrived at the minimum and medium security prison at approximately 10 a.m., according to Correctional Service Canada.
The offender was immediately taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead at 3 a.m. on Nov. 12.
At the time of his death, 34 year-old Cody Adams had been serving a sentence of two years, four months and 24 days for trafficking in property obtained by crime, forcible confinement and break enter with intent since May 30, 2016.
As in all cases involving the death of an inmate, Correctional Service Canada says it will review the circumstances of the incident and contact the police and the coroner as required.
It is unclear whether a portion of the prison was still on a lockdown from earlier in the week.
At about 10 a.m. on Nov. 6, the medium security unit was placed in a lockdown to enable staff members to conduct an exceptional search.
The search was ordered to ensure the safety and security of the institution, its staff and inmates, Correctional Service Canada reported.
Normal operations were to resume as soon as it was considered safe to do so.
"The Correctional Service of Canada (CSC) is committed to preventing the entry of contraband into its institutions. CSC also works in partnership with the police to take action against those who attempt to introduce contraband into correctional institutions," states a Correctional Service Canada press release about the search.
