The community connections centre, envisioned by Town of Olds staff, now has a home — in this building, just north of the Mountain View Museum & Archives.

OLDS — The community connections centre now has an official home.

During town council’s July 4 policies and priorities meeting, Community services director Doug Wagstaff announced it will be located in the provincial building at 4911 51st St., just north of the Mountain View Museum & Archives building.

On April 11, town council gave the green light for the centre to be created after lead community facilitator Heather Dixon pitched the idea in March.

The facility will provide space for non-profit groups from out of the community to meet and run programming. A long sought-after youth centre will be located in the basement.

Plans also call for the town’s three community facilitators to move in there this summer.

During the July 4 meeting, Wagstaff said the Mountain View Emergency Services Society and the BCG Olds and Area (previously known as the Boys and Girls Club of Olds and Area) are located in the space.

Wagstaff said BCG Olds and Area gets the lion’s share of the town’s FCSS funds.

“They have a number of facilities that are now spread out throughout the community,” he said.

Heather Dixon, the town’s lead community facilitator, told council that the centre will house a total of eight offices; seven on the main floor and one downstairs.

In addition to offices for the three town staff, the Mountain View emergency Shelter Society will have two offices. Another office will house the BGC Olds and Area youth coordinator.

Another office will be available to be booked by groups located in town or out-of town. There will also be space for groups to conduct programming, board meetings or supervised visitation.

Dixon said some “remodelling” is being undertaken.

Mayor Judy Dahl asked if the basement is the area that was once occupied by the Pregnancy Care Centre.

Dixon said that’s correct.
