Residents of Bowden had their first curbside recycling pickup completed on Friday after the town decided to go with the service in August. It replaces the town's recycling centre, which was closed in June by council due to abuse.

Council made the decision to go with Canpak Environmental Inc. on Aug. 27 after the Red Deer company approached the town about providing service.

The green boxes were delivered to residents on Nov. 1. Pickup will be every second Friday.

“Council looked at a number of options to address the void that closing the central recycling location posed. This is the solution that council came up with was to go with Canpak Environmental,” said Andy Weiss, the town's chief administrative officer.

The town signed a five-year contract with Canpak to have its staff pick up paper, cardboard, plastic, metal and glass. Each resident is charged $4 per month for the service.
