OLDS — Local resident Al Qually saw a sight few are ever blessed to witness: a doe with her three newborn fawns, right in town.
The momma gave birth to the fawns in a park near his home on Winter Drive on June 19.
"I was in my house and saw the doe lay down in a spot (where) I had viewed a fawn being born a few years ago,” Qually wrote in an email.
“I had seen the doe a day earlier and noticed that her udder was really full. (I) also noticed that last year’s fawn was now alone and likely chased away by the mom.”
Because of that, Qually was anticipating something might happen.
Then, at about noon on June 19, he saw her lay down.
“She also seemed preoccupied with something," he said. "I was only about 100 yards away and didn’t need my binoculars. I quickly put my raincoat on and went around the pathway to locate her from the other side through the willows."
Qually said she was only about 10 to 15 yards from the paved pathway and could be seen from his house.
“I just wanted to verify that she might have a new fawn and I saw it struggling to stand," he said.
"Then noticed the second and when I moved around for a better picture saw the third.
“The doe is quite used to people and didn’t seem to mind. I hope she will be able to look after them.”
