The Word of Life Church is collecting donations on behalf of the Red Cross to disburse to victims of flooding in Braeburn Estates.
“We're accepting financial donations for flood victims, gift cards for distribution and also I suppose if people had clothing or furniture they wish to donate to the cause, although those kinds of items … we're not yet sure as to the need that will be experienced once they return to their homes,” said Ed Furst, pastor of the church.
Currently, Furst said if people wanted to donate larger items such as clothing and furniture, they are being asked to contact the church at (403) 556-4042 so the church can compile a list of those items that may be called upon at a later date if necessary. Furst said that currently the church doesn't have the space to be able to store larger items, so it is asking that anyone who may have such items to hold off on donating them for the time being. Stang's Health Centre is also accepting donations of cash and gift cards.
“At this point, if the people are in transitional housing … they basically need food and the funds to continue living away from their homes until the homes are ready to return to. We're acting as an agent right now … and hoping that we can help out the situation by allowing people to make donations and then we can receipt them for their donations,” he said.
The church got involved in the effort by contacting the town office. The church was informed that the Red Cross was looking for a local charity that could act as receiver for donations.
“At this point we're just acting in the manner that we've been requested to and we're happy to help,” he said.
