Those drivers who broke out their cellphones to snap photographs of a crash on Highway 2 near the Highway 27 interchange east of Olds on April 10 can expect distracting driving tickets to show up in their mailboxes.At about 6:45 p.m., emergency crews were dispatched to the northbound lanes of Highway 2 after a 1989 Ford Thunderbird flipped after entering the centre median.Police said the driver, a 51-year-old Airdrie man, admitted he had fallen asleep and the car entered the median through a small gap between the end of the cable barrier system and the start of a guardrail protecting a pole supporting an overhead sign before rolling and coming to rest upside down.The driver was taken to Olds Hospital and Care Centre for the treatment of a small laceration and was released.He was charged with driving without due care and attention.Police reported seeing an “alarming” number of drivers taking cellphone photographs while driving past the scene.Investigators took down several licence plate numbers and police will mail distracted driving tickets to those drivers.
