Fair Trade Fortnight kicked off last week with a presentation of the documentary The Fair Trade.

It will continue this week with activities planned at Health Street, Cocoa Tree Bake Shoppe, and Bean Brokers.

“Fair Trade Fortnight is an internationally recognized period of time where fair trade is really promoted strongly and the awareness is built up,” said Kristin Allan, Fair Trade Olds committee member.

“We try to promote fair trade year-round in Olds because it's important every day of the year.”

On May 10, Health Street co-owner Rick Kohut, who is also a holistic nutritionist, will give a class about how to make raw chocolate from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.

“Health Street has done a number of raw food classes. They have been doing a series of raw chocolate classes that have been all sold out,” said Allan.

Then, guest speaker Mauricio Arcila will speak about the coffee industry at Cocoa Tree Bake Shoppe on May 11 at 7 p.m.

“Mauricio Arcila is from Colombia. He used to be part of the coffee industry in Colombia for a number of years,” said Allan.

Fair Trade Fortnight will conclude with a Mother's Day fair trade tea at Bean Brokers on May 13.

“It's going to be really fun. There will be two seatings: at 12 p.m. and at 2 p.m.,” said Allan.

People will need to purchase tickets in advance for this event at Bean Brokers.

Fair Trade Olds will also be running a trivia contest on its Facebook page.

“We have a Fair Trade Olds Facebook page that really has been ramping up. We have been getting lots of followers on there,” said Allan.

“Anyone that likes the Fair Trade Olds Facebook page during Fair Trade Fortnight is entered to win a raffle.”
