For the first time ever as far as town staff know, Olds didn’t set off fireworks during Canada Day this year. They’re now looking at setting them off Sept. 2 when the Tour of Alberta comes to Olds and again Nov. 26 during Olds Fashioned Christmas.

The Town of Olds, in conjunction with the Olds Fire Department, does not plan to set off any fireworks now until at least Sept. 2.

This past week, the town announced that “dependent on the availability of the pyrotechnics and Olds Fire Department,” it plans to set off fireworks Sept. 2, when the Tour of Alberta bike race comes into town; and Saturday, Nov. 26,during Olds Fashioned Christmas.

The town cancelled fireworks on Canada Day due to inclement weather.

The Albertan asked chief administrative officer Doug Wagstaff if the town had ever cancelled fireworks displays before.

“I checked with staff to see if any collective memory recalls a time the Canada Day fireworks had been cancelled and no one recalls having it postponed before,” he said.
