Fixing splash park drainage issues

Although it was only built last year, renovations to the splash park began last week.

Park N Play, the company that built the park, is correcting the slope of the outer ring of the cement pad to fix drainage issues encountered last summer.

“This requires removing the outer ring and re-pouring the concrete,” town chief operating officer Doug Wagstaff says.

“Weather permitting, we anticipate completion in time to open the park as seasonally scheduled for the May long weekend.”

Critics say this is only the latest of several fixes at the splash park.

Wagstaff says some assessment was done last year, but the actual work to remediate problems on the ground, so to speak, began last week.

“After opening the splash park, Park N Play identified a couple of issues they committed to rectify. The issues all related to drainage. Any remedial work last summer was temporary to mitigate the drainage issues, but no major work was done,” he says.

“As to not interrupt the use of the splash park last summer, the town and Park N Play agreed it was best to wait until after the inaugural season to fix the issues.

“The community really enjoyed the park, and we saw significant use of the facility.”

Wagstaff says after the splash park was closed last fall “some digging and cutting of cement occurred at different times” in preparation for this spring's work.

“Over the winter the town and Park N Play worked together toward solutions to resolve the issues. The work being done currently is part of the contractual work with Park N Play to complete the construction phase of the project,” Wagstaff says.

“The only other digging that occurred last summer in the vicinity of the splash park was to fix a water line leak between the old pool site and the splash park.”
