Hockey Day in Ethiopia

An Olds couple saw something most of us will never witness: kids playing street hockey in Africa.

Jared Ord, a dentist, and his wife Lindsay, a dental hygienist, travelled to Addis Ababa, Ethiopia last month to provide dental care, primarily to children.

They provided that care to about 230 people over 16 days, 210 of whom were children.

One of the team members knew the children waiting for that care would be waiting a long time – often most of the day, and that wait could be pretty boring. As many as 40 kids could be lined up.

So she brought over donated street hockey equipment, including nets, hockey jerseys, hockey sticks and balls.

“Here are these Ethiopian kids who've never seen hockey before playing street hockey right inside this compound and they're having the time of their life,” Jared said during an interview with the Albertan.

That was not their only entertainment.

“She did some chemistry experiments with cornstarch, things that they thought were really cool,” Jared said.
