Damage from a hot tub fire in Olds exceeds $10,000, deputy fire chief Brian Powell says. The fire broke out at a plastic-sided hot tub in the yard of a home on 44th Street behind Smitty's. There were no injuries. The homeowner wasn't home at the time of the blaze. The hot tub was insured, Powell says.A neighbour spotted the fire at about 5:45 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 13. It sent dark black, smelly smoke into the air.Powell says the quick-thinking neighbour prevented things from getting any worse.“A neighbour came home and discovered flames and alerted his wife. She called 911. He promptly went over to the neighbour's house, shut the breaker off and then pulled out their garden hose, stayed at a safe distance and controlled the progression of the fire,” Powell says.“(He did) a very good job,” Powell adds. “Had he not done that, it clearly would have extended into the garage.”There's fire damage to the garage as well as a garage wall and window. The hot tub, which sat out on a patio adjacent to the garage, was destroyed. A hot tub cover was damaged as well.Powell says an investigation has determined that the hot tub was properly installed.
