An inmate who went missing from the Bowden Institution April 26 was located in Calgary early Saturday evening.
Dean Leonard McClelland, 46, was located and arrested “without incident” in Calgary around 6:30 p.m. April 28, a Calgary Police Services press release states.
McClelland is described as 187 cm (6-2) in height, 68 kg (150 lbs), has blue eyes and red hair, tattoos on his hands, arms, legs, back and chest, and was discovered missing around 10:15 at night during the institution's minimum security annex head count last Thursday.
“It's what you would call a walk-away,” said Cpl. Jeff Hildebrant of the Innisfail RCMP last Thursday.
McClelland was in the minimum-security annex area where there are no fences, he added.
Innisfail RCMP were notified initially on April 26.
“Multiple members were attending, however there was heavy rain over a significant period of that time so that confounded some of our efforts to develop a trail,” Hildebrandt said of initial efforts Thursday evening. He said there was a 1994 green GMC truck stolen that night that police believe may be connected to McClelland because of the timing.
The Innisfail RCMP were dispatched as well as the canine unit and other RCMP patrols.
Hildebrandt said the RCMP believed most of his community connections were in Calgary and Calgary Police Services were notified shortly after the investigation begun.
Calgary Police Services said assistance from the public helped lead to the discovery of McClelland's whereabouts. McClelland will be remanded in custody and transferred to Correctional Services Canada in the near future.
McClelland is currently serving a three-year, eight-month, 15-day sentence for mischief in relation to property criminal harassment, mischief in relation to property and arson – damage to property.
