New O-NET TV platform in testing stage in Olds

Olds-based company is waiting for its new TV system to be fully operational before expanding into new markets

OLDS — Testing of O-NET's new TV platform is now occurring among a portion of the company’s subscriber base, chief administrative officer Brent Williams says.

Williams made that announcement during town council’s Aug. 28 meeting.

O-NET, which is owned by the Town of Olds and is in partnership with Calgary-based FourNetworks and Nation Fiber Corp., provides high-speed internet, phone and TV service.

The new cloud-based TV platform will allow consumers to obtain their service on any device, from TV to phone or tablet.

In early spring, O-NET and town officials announced that the company was spending approximately $400,000 to upgrade its TV service to the point where they believe it can compete with major TV/internet providers like Telus, Bell or Rogers.

Initially the forecast was to have that new service provided to subscribers by late spring or summer, but that didn’t happen.

“We hope within the next several weeks, the full implementation will be open to everyone,” Williams said.

Williams said O-NET has hired a former Telus employee to serve as a senior network administrator.

He said the company is waiting for its new TV system to be fully operational before expanding into new markets.

In other O-NET-related news, Williams said efforts are underway to fill the final vacancy on the company’s board of directors.

“We have three candidates that the governing committee will be meeting with next week,” he said.
