An Olds man who caused a two-vehicle crash that claimed the life of a 62-year-old woman in October 2011 has been fined and placed on probation.

Dilan Cole Kolb, 20, was the driver of a 2005 Ford pickup that was eastbound on the Amerada Road, south of Olds, when he attempted to cross the four lanes of the QEII on the afternoon of October 6, 2011, court heard.

Kolb had made it across the two southbound lanes, but when he attempted to cross the northbound lanes, a northbound 2010 Nissan Sentra car travelling at about 111 kilometres per hour slammed into the side of his pickup truck.

A 62-year-old female passenger in the car, Georgia Lyons of North Bay, Ont., died in the collision. A second woman in the car received serious injures, including a punctured lung and a shattered leg.

On March 21 Kolb pleaded guilty to a charge under the Provincial Offences Procedures Act Rules of the Road of failing to proceed safely.

His sentencing by Judge P. McIlhargey was originally scheduled for April 30, but was adjourned after the judge said he was not convinced that the $2,000 fine proposed by Crown and defence was adequate.

Although the charge carries a maximum fine of $2,000, it also allows for a six-month jail term.

On Nov. 8, the judge sentenced Kolb to a $1,725 fine and placed him on probation for nine months.

Following court, Kolb was asked by the Gazette if he had any comments or would answer questions. He said no.

Georgia Lyons was a nationally recognized teacher known affectionately as “Grammar Granny” for her education work.
