OLDS — Town residents are urged to limit their water use for the next 24 hours because heavy rainfall is threatening to overload Olds’ sanitary sewer system, town officials say.
Town staff have been monitoring the regional lift station’s capacity since the evening of Wednesday, June 14 due to concerns that recent rains could overload the sanitary system, town officials relayed in a new release issued this morning (June 15).
“The lift station was reaching critical capacity early Thursday morning, and pumping began to divert potential overflow,” the town’s news release said.
“The situation is stabilizing, but preventative measures are still needed. Town residents are encouraged to conserve water for the next 24 hours, as this will ease pressure on our sanitary system.”
The release said pumping is done to prevent damage and backup into private property and to ensure the integrity of the sanitary infrastructure.
“The town is in regular contact with the South Red Deer Regional Wastewater Commission, who owns and operates the regional lift station, and Alberta Environment and Parks, who permits and monitors sanitary releases such as this.
“There's no threat to public health or safety. Updates will be provided via the town's website and social media, channels should the situation change,” the release said.
