The Royal Canadian Air Cadet Squadron 185 Olds received a surprise last Thursday during its annual inspection.
The squadron was named top regional cadet support unit in the Prairie Region, an honour it had previously won a few years ago.
“It's an amazing honour. The squadron deserves it. They have done a lot work. The officers have worked together very hard,” said Capt. Joy Cavin, Royal Canadian Air Cadet Squadron 185 Olds.
“We were just told we almost got it last year as well but we were off by two points.”
According to Capt. Bob Bogovics, officer in charge of the Central Zone, air cadet squadrons were evaluated on cadet retention, cadet activities, overall squadron operation, squadron administration, and squadron supply.
“Within Alberta, there are nine air cadets squadrons, within my area of responsibility,” said Bogovics.
“Out of that criteria for the nine units, 185 Squadron scored the highest for total score.”
During the review, two other awards were presented. Sgt. Caleb Ould received the Royal Canadian Legion Cadet Medal of Excellence, while Capt. Ed Wiper received the Lord Strathcona Medal, in recognition for his help in building the squadron.
After the annual inspection was done, the squadron made its way to the legion, where it held its annual banquet.
More awards were presented during the banquet.
