Olds' annual celebration to welcome summer will likely move to a new home this year. But don't worry, it's not too far from the old home.Due to construction projects planned for Olds' downtown core this summer, organizers of the Oldstice celebration have tabled a proposal to move the event from its normal location on 50 Avenue south of 50 Street to new digs on 50 Avenue north of 50 Street as well as on 48 Street west of 50 Avenue.Deb Aitken, a coordinator with Uptowne Olds, the celebration's main sponsor and organizer, said organizers are also looking to secure the parking lot at the Texas Mickey bar to serve as the site of the celebration's festival stage since the business will be closed at the time. And the Mountain View Pistons Show and Shine that takes place during Oldstice could relocate north of 50 Street as well, she added.Having the celebration move to the north part of the core will keep the intersection of 50 Avenue and 50 Street open to traffic and will give the event more visibility from Highway 27, Aitken said. The potential move, she added, also addresses questions from businesses on the north part of 50 Avenue who have asked when the event would include that part of the street.“So the business owners, many of them are quite happy that it's finally going to be giving them a little more exposure, being located in front of their shops.”One potential challenge is parking for the event, Aitken said, but she added she is confident parking facilities in and around the downtown core will be expanded before the celebration. The Town of Olds has plans to expand a parking lot at the southwest corner of the intersection of 49 Avenue and 50 Street prior to Oldstice.Organizers will monitor how this year's setup for Oldstice works and determine if the same location will be used in the future, she said. The fourth annual Summer Oldstice takes place on June [email protected]
