The Uptowne Olds committee will be celebrating the return of summer on June 24 with what organizers are calling Summer Oldstice.
Street vendors selling everything from handicrafts, blown glass and woodworking, as well as non-profit groups will be at the event. A total of 27 vendors plus five representatives of uptown businesses will be at the market, with applications still being accepted for the event. In addition to the non-profit groups, the event will also feature artists, bakers and growers, among other groups. The market will be taking place from 4 to 9 p.m.
Sidewalk sales from the uptown businesses will be ongoing all day.
The idea for the event was to get people out celebrating the return of summer, in addition to being a good promotional tool for the uptown businesses.
50 Street to 52 Street where they meet 50 Avenue will be blocked off, as well as portions of 49 Avenue.
The blockades will be put up at noon to allow the street vendors to set up their tables.
“We're going to have the blockades manned so that people know that they need to have their vehicles out by 2:30 (p.m.) because then we're going to start bringing the vendors in so we can set up,” said Colleen Hanke, a member of the marketing sub-committee of Uptowne Olds.
The event will also feature buskers at various points uptown as well as a mainstage with performers from 4 to 11 p.m. While many of the entertainers had yet to be finalized last week, Miss Quincy and the Ramblers, featuring Tyler Toews, will headline the entertainment portion of the event. Members of the Schramm family, as well as Mike and Dave Bigelow will also take the stage. Scott van de Pypekamp, who is organizing the entertainment, said plenty of the area's youth will also be taking the stage to show off their talents.
“They're really trying to bring The Fringe Festival Element to it,” he said.
