October is Canadian Library Month and Parkland Regional Library (PRL) is celebrating that fact.
During the month, PRL is running a campaign to raise awareness of digital resources in libraries and the new Alberta-wide borrowing service through ME Libraries.
As part of the campaign, PRL will release new plastic library membership cards, and post ads on social media to encourage the public to discover the different services available at the library.
“Libraries across the region have a wide variety of resources, both physical and digital, to suit every kind of lifestyle. Whether you are on the go or looking for a cozy community space, October is the month to renew your library membership,” a PRL news release says.
PRL officials say their regional digital content is growing and evolving to address the needs of central Albertans.
“Often people are unaware of what is available from today's public library,” says Ron Sheppard, director of Parkland Regional Library. “Our regional collection of digital content is growing fast – our member libraries are enthusiastic about contributing to our new eBook service, 3M Cloud Library.
“There are multiple services that bring popular digital content to library patrons who don't have the time to walk through the doors of the library. Patrons can borrow movies, TV shows, music, books, and audiobooks from the comfort of their own living room. All they need is a library card.”
“Our aim for the campaign is to bring attention to the services offered at the local library and to attract new members. Many people stop visiting the library after childhood, but the library is an evolving service with much to offer, no matter what your age,” says Meredith Bratland, Parkland's communications co-ordinator.
With a local library card, PRL members have access to thousands of eBooks, eNewspapers, eMagazines, as well as online music, movies and TV shows.
And, by registering their library card with the ME Libraries network, those patrons have unlimited access to the physical collections of other Alberta public libraries.
