Members of the Innisfail RCMP's Integrated Traffic Unit are looking for a blue or black Dodge minivan that may have contributed to a fatal crash Thursday afternoon about five kilometres north of Highway 27 on the Queen Elizabeth II Highway.
Police, Olds Fire and Rescue and Emergency Medical Services personnel were called to the scene at 3:45 p.m. after a southbound blue 2010 Honda Civic travelling in the right lane went into the west ditch, rolled several times and came to a rest on all four wheels.
Emergency Services personnel extricated the 20-year-old male driver from Calgary, an 18-year-old male passenger from Vancouver and a 20-year-old male from Victoria from the vehicle.
A fourth occupant, identified as Cary Dean Asplund, 19, was taken from the scene by emergency personnel with serious injuries but was later pronounced dead by medical staff.
The 18-year-old male from Vancouver was also transported to hospital for treatment of serious injuries.
The other two occupants received minor injuries and were treated at the scene.
The southbound lanes of the highway were restricted to one lane for about four hours while the RCMP and sheriffs investigated the crash.
Police believe that all four occupants of the vehicle were wearing their seatbelts at the time of the crash. Police said road conditions were bare and dry with excellent visibility at the time of the crash.
Alcohol was not a factor in the crash.
No charges had been laid as of Friday. RCMP are asking anyone who may have information related to the crash to call the Innisfail RCMP at (403) 227-3342 or Crimestoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
