OLDS —Staff Sgt. Warren Wright, the commander of the Olds RCMP detachment, is holding a meeting via Zoom to enable local residents who have any issues with policing and crime in town to share those concerns.
That meeting is scheduled to occur on Thursday, Oct. 14 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.
Residents interested in participating are encouraged to email the Olds RCMP detachment ahead of time at [email protected] and ask for instructions on how to join the meeting.
If you can't attend the meeting but still want to share your concerns, you can do so via the above email address.
“Normally, this type of engagement would take place in-person in a facility; however, due to the current state of the COVID pandemic, public gatherings are not an option for the RCMP," a town news release says.
“Please be advised all participants will receive some form of response from Staff Sgt. Wright and updates describing the outcome of this public engagement event will be forwarded to the local media.”
An additional opportunity for residents of Bowden and Mountain View County to provide their input will be held this coming February.
Wright told The Albertan via email that the meeting is not the result of any crime surge in the community because he said there isn’t one.
He said the meeting is an initiative of the RCMP’s K Division, which covers Alberta.
“RCMP K Division encourages every detachment in the province to complete a minimum of two town hall – community engagement events per fiscal year,” he wrote.
“From my perspective, I agree with this initiative because I want to hear from citizens, not just elected officials, as to what their policing or safety concerns are in the community.”
