The 2014 Capital One Race for Kids in Olds raised more than $26,000 on May 31 to expand after-school programming for youth 10 and older. The Boys and Girls Club of Olds & Area will have the upper floor of its building available in July to accommodate extra activity, said Mindy Grover, executive director for the club.Eleven teams participated in the race in Olds, which Grover described as a combination of The Amazing Race and Minute to Win It.Teams started with a clue and had to decide where their next destination would be. Upon arrival, they would have to do an activity to advance. The PM Squad finished first and took home a $1,000 prize in addition to $400 for winning a mystery checkpoint where they had to read a story to a child.Another award was given to Jody Carrington for raising the most money, $2,426. She won two Westjet vouchers to wherever the airline flies. All the money raised that day came from sponsors, donors, team sign-up fees and pledges. The Race for Kids will also pay for free programming for youth 10 and older in June.“We have to charge for other programs and it's always an issue. That collecting fee part is the worst part of anybody's job,” Grover said. “But this just makes that so much easier for parents to just know they can access it and be able to have that accessibility right here in our community.”[email protected]
