Remaining flood-displaced seniors heading home

The remaining 62 seniors at Olds College who were forced from their residence in Calgary during flooding in June are scheduled to return home on Aug. 15.

The remaining 62 seniors at Olds College who were forced from their residence in Calgary during flooding in June are scheduled to return home on Aug. 15.

In the wake of the floods that hit southern Alberta on June 20 and 21, more than 120 seniors from the damaged Trinity Place Foundation seniors housing complex were brought to Olds on June 28.

Sixty of those seniors staying at the college’s Frank Grisdale Hall residence returned home on July 12 but the other 62 had to stay since repairs to Murdock Manor, one of the three complexes that make up Trinity Place, were not expected to be completed until mid-August.

Doug Wagstaff, the college’s manager of campus life, said now that the repairs are nearing completion, the remaining displaced seniors can return to Calgary.

"At this point, they’re just anxious to get home," he said.

The seniors will be taken by bus back to Calgary, Wagstaff added.

Lisa Rushka, a spokeswoman for the foundation, said the foundation is awaiting final inspection approvals for the manor from the City of Calgary and is anticipating residents will be able to return this week.
