Residents urged to plant tree in CIB member's name

Olds Communities in Bloom co-chair Linda Maxwell is hoping community residents will plant some trees this fall in memory of Donna Coonfer, a longtime CIB member who passed away in late June.

They can do so via the Trees Forever program, which was initially known as Trees for Tots.

Its purpose is to encourage the community to support tree planting – also known as urban forestry -- by planting trees in commemoration of someone or something. Examples include the birth of a child, the death of a loved one, or a special occasion.

“That was one of Donna's pet projects,” Maxwell says, estimating Coonfer had been a member of the CIB committee for roughly 15 years.

She suggests some may want to make a donation in Coonfer's name.

“Even if they get their name down when it comes to the fall, they can do that.”

Contrary to what some may think, fall is a good time to plant trees, Maxwell says.

“The committee is so sorry to lose such a good friend,” she adds, noting in addition to CIB, Coonfer volunteered for many groups, committees and causes.
