A 51-year-old Olds woman is believed to have survived a rollover on the QEII last week because of her seatbelt.

Although the driver was admitted to a Calgary hospital in critical condition, a forensic collision analyst who investigated the scene believes the fact that the driver was wearing her seatbelt saved her life, said an Airdrie Traffic Unit officer.

At 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 7, the Airdrie Integrated Traffic Unit was alerted to a motor vehicle rollover that occurred in the southbound lanes of Highway 2 just north of Airdrie.

Didsbury RCMP also attended.

Upon arrival, officers located a Ford F-150 that had rolled into the centre median.

The 51-year-old driver and lone occupant of the F-150 was airlifted to hospital in Calgary by STARS air ambulance.

She sustained serious injuries, said police.

The cause of the collision remains under investigation, but police say officers now believe the driver may have been suffering from a pre-existing medical condition which led to her losing control of the vehicle.

Road conditions were favourable at the time of the crash.

Both the northbound and southbound lanes of Highway 2 were closed at the collision location for a short time to allow STARS to land.
