OLDS — Town council has proclaimed the entire month of September as Back To School Traffic Safety Month in Olds.
Council passed a motion to that effect during its Aug. 22 meeting after receiving a presentation on the matter from its senior peace officer, Paul Wright.
Wright noted that his department recommended the proclamation in order to underline the importance of obeying traffic safety rules, especially next month, as children head back to school after their summer break.
Wright said he planned to undertake a social media campaign to alert residents to follow the rules of the road and to watch out for children going to and from school.
He said peace officers’ duties to that end will be coordinated with local school principals.
Wright said in addition, a bike rodeo is planned for Sept. 23 with a focus on bicycle safety.
Coun. Heather Ryan asked if Olds peace officers will be doing stepped up enforcement around schools and residential areas where school buses travel, especially during school hours. Wright said they will.
A request for decision from town staff noted that Alberta Transportation encourages communities throughout the province to declare September as Back to School Traffic Safety Month.
“The objective is to educate children and adults about safe travel behaviour, no matter how they get to and from school," the memo said.
“Education can help citizens of all ages learn that safety is a shared responsibility among all road users, regardless of what mode of transportation they are using.”
The proclamation, signed by Town of Olds Mayor Judy Dahl, says “it is in the public's interest to raise citizens' awareness for drivers, parents, and children to slow down, walk safe, be alert, and follow the rules of the road – especially before and after school.”
The proclamation also said a commitment to back-to-school traffic safety not only rests with adults and children but also with local businesses and organizations.
