The Olds Advisory Group for Sustainable Living (OAGSL) invites Olds residents, businesses, groups, and elected officials to participate in the Other Side of Occupy event, which will take place this Saturday at the Olds High School Commons.
“In 2011, the Occupy movement was one of the defining legacies. It started out as a fairly noble cause. But it went off track,” said Norm McInnis, Town of Olds CAO.
“We saw the opportunity to look at the genesis of the Occupy movement and talk about the power of it. It's about bringing people together, having a conversation about the state of our community, the good things, some of the things that we know we have some challenges with, and how we can move forward.”
The event will start at 9 a.m. with a keynote address by Mark Anielski, author of The Economics of Happiness: Building Genuine Wealth.
“We are pretty excited to bring Anielski to talk about his genuine wealth model and maybe see if we want to incorporate some of his thoughts,” said McInnis.
“His underlying premise is that the GDP is not really an adequate measure of how we are doing as a society anymore. There's a lot more to it than what the GDP measures.”
In the afternoon, there will be facilitated conversation about Anielski's work.
The event falls under the umbrella of the town's sustainability movement.
“It's about continuous progress, continuous improvement, and that's why I think that people that are passionate about Olds should come out and at least see what is going on and hopefully contribute some nuggets that we can grab onto and help us formulate strategies and action plans to continue to move forward in a sustainable way,” said McInnis.
