OLDS —  Flags were lowered to half mast as the town paid tribute to the passing of Jane Archer, a longtime employee in the planning and development department.

Archer passed away during the week of Nov. 16 after a brief illness.

Mayor Michael Muzychka and chief administrative officer Michael Merritt both paid tribute to Archer at the beginning of town council’s Nov. 23 meeting.

“The town of Olds family has lost one of our own this past week,” Muzychka said as he began his remarks.

He noted Archer had worked for the town for more than 15 years, not only in the planning and development department, but in other capacities as well.

Muzychka passed on condolences to Archer’s family on behalf of council and administrative staff.

Merritt said in her job, Archer “reached many people, both internally to the town but also external.”

“Having worked with the (for) town over 15 years, Jane was really one of our longer serving members, and to lose someone of that stature and value is really heart-rendering at this time as we’re going through quite a bit — not only the town, but the province,” he said.

“We also want to pass on our deepest thoughts and sympathies to Jane’s family, her colleagues, her friends and associates, and she has many of all those to speak to.”

Merritt said not only were flags lowered to half-mast to mark Archer’s passing, but the town will also donate trees in her memory.

“I think that’s a very fitting item, as we have tree requirements to replace and I think by having donations of the trees will be a great memory (of) Jane and her dedication to our town,” he said.

“So with that, I would just like to say thank you Jane for all your years of service and your kindness and rest in peace.”
