OLDS — More residents are having their groceries picked up at curbside as a result of the pandemic, an Olds town official says.
In a council meeting, Emergency Operations Centre director Brian Powell presented stats on grocery deliveries and other services offered through the town's emergency social services.
According to those stats, as of early May during the lockdown, 1,209 grocery store curbside pickups were provided and 135 grocery deliveries were initiated, aided by community groups.
Coun. Mary Jane Harper asked whether curbside pickups had increased as a result of the COVID-19 lockdown.
“Yes – they have seen an upswing with regards to COVID,” community services director Doug Wagstaff said.
“That’s the piece we’ve been promoting; where our community supports that exist can fill the need, that’s what we’re connecting people to,” Wagstaff said.
“One of the issues of why we’re tracking that is to make sure that that capacity’s there and if they are still able to maintain it as they have been,” he added.
