Traffic slowed southbound on the QEII Saturday and Sunday as crews worked to clean up a train derailment that occurred about five kilometres south of Innisfail.

Ten train cars derailed at 1:27 a.m. April 21 confirmed Kevin Hrysak, media spokesman for Canadian Pacific Saturday.

He said a train was heading north when the accident occurred causing 10 empty cars to go off the track.

There were no injuries to the crew, no environmental concerns or risks to the area, he added.

He couldn't comment on what happened or what lead to the derailment, saying an investigation is ongoing and could take anywhere from one month to one year to determine.

CP and emergency crews responded immediately to the area.

Innisfail RCMP were on scene for a couple of hours Saturday and four hours Sunday helping to assist with traffic. On Sunday Alberta Highway Services took over.
