The Cam Clark Auto Group has confirmed it will save a lone spruce tree standing at the former Olds High School site when it builds a dealership at that location, said Blake Clark, general manager of the group’s Olds dealership.
The confirmation comes ahead of a public hearing scheduled for Oct. 15 where the public will have a chance to share its opinions on a proposed bylaw that would change the land use designation of the former high school site located off of Highway 27 between 50 and 52 avenues from recreational facility to highway commercial.
First reading was given to the bylaw on Sept. 9.
The tree was donated by an Olds College professor who passed away in 2007 and was planted at the site in 1995 by a former French teacher at the high school.
The community and Chinook’s Edge School Division were able to have the tree saved when the old school was demolished in 2010.
Cam Clark Auto Group is buying the site from the school division and information about the group’s plan for the site, which is now divided by 51 Avenue, will be shared at the hearing.
Written submissions to the town’s planning department about the rezoning proposal may also be submitted and should be directed to Werner Fischer, the town’s manager of planning, by 4:30 p.m. on Oct. 14.
Fischer declined to comment on how long town staff has been in discussion with the Cam Clark Auto Group on the proposal.
The public hearing is scheduled for 1 p.m.
