Two men have been charged in connection with the Rexall Drug Store robbery on Feb. 1. Tyler Chad Cox, 21, and Stanley Chad Cox, 46, both of Red Deer, have been charged with eight counts and seven counts respectively in relation to the heist.
Both men have been charged with one count each of pointing a firearm, use of a firearm in the commission of a criminal offence, wearing a disguise in the commission of an offence, possession of a weapon dangerous to the public peace, possession of a prohibited weapon used in a careless manner and two counts of possession of a weapon contrary to a prohibition order. Tyler Chad Cox has also been charged with an additional count of robbery.
Staff Sgt. Kevin Morton of the Olds RCMP said the prohibited weapon was a sawed-off shotgun.
The men were arrested in Red Deer by the RCMP's Emergency Response Team on Saturday.
ìThe investigation conducted over the weeks since the event on the first of February led us to believe that these gentlemen were responsible for some other related events in the city of Red Deer as well as in Three Hills that led us to these two gentlemen,î Morton said, adding that because of all the incidents, it was felt that the ERT would be the best way to keep members safe.
The investigation into the robbery involved the Olds, Three Hills and Red Deer City RCMP, and was led by the Calgary RCMP's General Investigation Section.
The two men made their first court appearances in Red Deer on Monday. Morton said late Monday afternoon he was unaware of the outcome of their appearances. Morton said additional charges may be pending or the charges may be amended.
ìIt was a pretty intense investigative period and now we need to sit down and review everything and make sure we got all the right pieces in place,î he said.
Morton said officers who worked the investigation did a lot of work in a relatively short period of time in order to wrap it up.
ìFour members of Olds detachment made exceptional significant time contributions well beyond normal work hours in order to ensure that this was able to (conclude),î he said.
