Fresh local fruit and vegetables were collected, a straw maze was navigated, scarecrows were stuffed and many a hotdog was enjoyed.

All of this took place under a hot September sun during the second annual Olds Harvest Festival, held at Centennial Park on Sept. 21.

The event was co-hosted by several local organizations including Uptowne Olds and the Olds Communities in Bloom committee and nearly 30 vendors and community booths lined the pathways of the park.

Following live music, Communities in Bloom announced the winners of its Beautiful Gardens contest.

The town was broken up into five zones for judging and the first-place winners were Dale and Marjorie Mauck on Beech Crescent, Dawna Findlay on Shannon Drive, Marvin and Janet Smith on Duncan Place, Donald Dwyer and Elizabeth Schott on 51 Street and Ilene Miller on 47 Street.

First place in the organization's best photograph category went to Veronica Reist, the best apple pie award went to Patsy Hicock, best jam went to Jacqueline Bates, funniest shaped vegetable went to Marilyn Theissen for her brontosaurus potato head and largest sunflower went to Austin Corsiatto.

Across town at the Cornerstone shopping centre, the Olds Chamber of Commerce held a community barbecue in support of the festival where roughly 15 volunteers handed out hotdogs to nearly 400 people.
