Proposed solution to retain long-term care to be discussed

Sundre and surrounding area residents are invited to a public consultation regarding a potential solution for the local hospital.

Sundre and surrounding area residents are invited to a public consultation regarding a potential solution for the local hospital.

“The solution has been developed by the Sundre Hospital Futures Committee,” said Jason Nixon, Rimbey-Rocky Mountain House-Sundre MLA.

“I brought and negotiated it with the health minister, and it would ensure two key things: that long-term care remains in Sundre and that all of the facility will remain 100 per cent open.”

Following Alberta Health Services' recent announcement regarding the closure of the hospital's 15 long-term care beds, many members of the community expressed a range of emotions from concern and confusion to frustration and outrage.

But the MLA felt confident that local efforts in collaborating with provincial officials had moved towards a solution for the Sundre Hospital and Care Centre. However, Nixon said he wants to communicate and consult with the community before moving any further towards finalizing the potential solution.

“We want feedback to make sure we're on the right track.”

As of Friday, April 29, the MLA said he could not yet provide specific details on the potential solution as the proposal was still being looked over by provincial officials.

The meeting to discuss the proposed solution is scheduled to take place this Thursday, May 5 at the Sundre Community Centre starting at 7 p.m.
