Some Sundre residents have recently expressed concerns that mysterious plastic tags placed on their properties could be identifying their homes as potential targets for burglars.

However, the local RCMP detachment's commander told the Round Up such reports have not been verified or confirmed by authorities to be indicative of criminal elements engaged in staking out properties to mark them with tags or flagging tape.

"It is suspicious, that's for sure," said Sgt. Jim Lank, adding the matter is one police would be looking into.

"We really don't know who's doing it."

If confirmed, it would be the first time the sergeant has heard of scheming thieves employing such a tactic, although Lank said he was not certain how likely the scenario actually is.

"(But) it is possible," he added.

Should any residents return home to find a plastic tag or suspicious marker planted on their property, the sergeant recommends first contacting the municipality and also to check with utility as well as service providers before calling the police.

However, anyone who is able to determine through those channels that the marker was not placed in any kind of official or legitimate capacity should refrain from removing the tag and instead report the incident to the RCMP as soon as possible, he said.

"Allow us to attend the property to examine the scene."

The Sundre RCMP detachment can be reached at 403-638-3675, while the Town of Sundre's municipal office can be contacted at 403-638-3551.
