A couple of patrons and a bartender at the Sundre Hotel were recently left shaken but otherwise unhurt after being held at gunpoint.
“He came in, pointed the gun at the customers, told them to get down, and then went over to the bartender to demand the cash,” said Michaela MacTavish, who has been the manager at the hotel for about four months.
The bartender took a few days off of work, but has since returned, said MacTavish, who was not present at the time of the holdup. But it was the second time during her four months managing the hotel that it was robbed.
“We got robbed last month and then exactly a month later we got robbed again,” she said, calling the incidents “pretty terrible luck.”
At about midnight on Friday, June 3, police were called to the hotel following the report of a robbery with a firearm. By the time officers arrived, the suspect had already fled the scene, but not without making off with several thousand dollars in cash.
As police investigated, officers were able to locate the suspect's clothes, which were dumped a short distance from the hotel.
The hotel has security cameras, and footage was made available to police, said MacTavish.
As of last week, the matter remained under investigation. Police urge anyone who witnessed or has information about the robbery to contact the Sundre RCMP detachment at 403-638-3675 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-8477 (TIPS).
