SUNDRE — About a week after being arrested and charged late in March with numerous offences including uttering threats, a Sundre man who earlier this year was sentenced over assaulting a peace officer among other criminal matters, was found in possession of stolen property and once again taken into custody in recent weeks.

A member of the Sundre RCMP was conducting patrols on April 8 when the officer noticed a gate to a rural property that he knew should have been closed and locked, was left ajar, reads a portion of a press release issued April 27.

“The member initiated an investigation into break and enter and as a result recovered one of the stolen side-by-sides — along with the stolen trailer it was in — on the property,” said police.

The recovered off-highway vehicle was one of two reported stolen in March.

Arrested at the property was Daniel Conway, 26, from Sundre, police said.

“One of these side-by-sides that was stolen, is what he was found in possession of,” said Sgt. Trent Sperlie, the Sundre RCMP detachment’s commander.

Above and beyond a lengthy list of existing offences, the accused now faces the additional charges of: one count of breaking and entering; two counts of possession of stolen property more than $5,000; one count of mischief less than $5,000; two counts of failing to comply with a probation order; and one count of failing to comply with a release order condition.

“Shocking enough, he’s still in custody,” said Sperlie.

Conway was remanded and set to speak to Airdrie provincial court on Thursday, April 28 , when his case was re-scheduled to Monday, May 2 for plea at the Didsbury provincial court. An update on yesterday’s appearance was not available prior to press deadline.

As the other of the two stolen side-by-sides, as well as the trailer that stored it, remain missing — a 2014 red Honda SXS 700 and a black 2020 Canada Trailers utility trailer — police continue asking the public for information about the theft.

“Each side-by-side was in its own trailer,” said Sperlie.

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact the Sundre RCMP at 403-638-3675 or their local police department. Callers who prefer to remain anonymous may contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS), submit information online at www.P3Tips.com or by using the P3 Tips app available through the Apple App or Google Play Store.
