A man from Blackfalds died during the May long weekend and another from Red Deer was injured when their off highway vehicle rolled over in Clearwater County.
On Saturday, May 21 at about 1:15 p.m., emergency responders were dispatched to the scene of the crash, which was located along a power line northwest of Sundre near Birch Lake in Clearwater County, police said.
The preliminary investigation revealed that two occupants were operating a Razor 800 Side by Side along the power line when they crested a hill and then lost control while descending the other side. The vehicle rolled and sustained significant damage to the cab area, including the roll bars. Responders performed CPR on the driver for about 45 minutes and he was then pronounced deceased at the scene by an attending paramedic. The passenger was transported to a Calgary hospital by STARS Air Ambulance and is reported to be in stable condition, said police.
Police believe both occupants were wearing safety helmets and were also buckled in by a four-point harness. The 37-year-old male driver was from Blackfalds and the 31-year-old male passenger is from Red Deer, the RCMP reported.
As of last week, the matter was still under investigation, including toxicology results from the Calgary Medical Examiner's Office to determine the level — if any — of drugs or alcohol.
