Update — snowmobile collision on Snake Hill results in charges
In the early morning hours of Jan. 14, police and EMS were called to the parking lot of Snake Hill. A 21-year-old male operating a snowmobile with an 18-year-old female passenger slammed into the metal gate at the south end of the parking lot. Both the male and female suffered serious bodily injuries and had to be transported to Calgary for treatment. The police investigation determined that alcohol was a factor in the collision with the male operator's blood alcohol content well over the legal limit. On May 28, Austin MacIntosh, 21, of Sundre, was arrested and criminally charged with impaired operation of a motor vehicle and impaired operation of a motor vehicle causing bodily harm. MacIntosh was released from custody and is due to appear in provincial court in Didsbury on July 11.
Double whammy by thieves for Sundre businesses
During the early morning hours of May 3, the Advanced Telecom store and the Sundre Hotel were broken into and burgled. The loss to Advanced Telecom, combined with the damage to the door, was more than $2,000. The Sundre Hotel suffered a loss of several thousand dollars after the thieves entered through a tampered door at around 3:30 a.m. and then proceeded to steal the previous night's earnings and float money. Anyone with information or who witnessed this activity is encouraged to contact the Sundre RCMP at 403-638-3675 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS).
Another impaired driver removed from the streets
On May 14 at approximately 4 a.m., police were on patrol when they saw a vehicle speeding northbound on Centre Street. A traffic stop was initiated and the male driver was found to be impaired. The male was arrested and taken back to the detachment where he provided samples of his breath that had values over the legal limit. Tyler Mahan, 31, of Sundre, was criminally charged with impaired operation of a motor vehicle and impaired operation of motor vehicle with a blood alcohol content above the legal limit. Mahan was released from custody and was scheduled to appear in provincial court in Didsbury on June 13.
Improper parking update
As mentioned in the last police report, the Sundre RCMP and the Town of Sundre's community peace officer entered into the second phase of the two-part approach to deal with the growing number of parking and other non-moving traffic infractions within the town. For the months of March and April, the first part consisted of educational awareness, during which period notices were placed in the Town of Sundre's section of the Round Up as well as in the Round Up's police report. Notice was also sent out with the monthly utility bill to the town's residents and warning letters were sent to registered owners of vehicles that were found to be in violation.
The second part of the approach, which started May 1, has transitioned to enforcement. To date, several registered owners have been issued violation tickets through the mail. The Sundre RCMP detachment would like to remind residents to ensure that their vehicles are in compliance with the rules of the road and town bylaws. It is not the responsibility of the police or CPO to track down owners to tell them to park correctly. This is the responsibility of the driver and the owner of the vehicle.
