SUNDRE — Council recently made a couple of proclamations in recognition of the crucial contributions to society of both public works employees as well as agriculture producers.
Linda Nelson, chief administrative officer, presented the items on April 11 during a regular council meeting.
The first to be briefly discussed was National Public Works Week, which is observed May 12 to 21. The theme of this year’s public works week is “Ready and Resilient,” which the Alberta chapter of the American Public Works Association (APWA) is also recognizing.
This public works proclamation has for 62 years been observed annually during the third, full week of May.
“Public works superheroes help keep communities strong by providing an infrastructure of services in transportation, water, wastewater and stormwater treatment, public building and spaces, parks and grounds, emergency management and first response, solid waste, and right-of-way management,” reads a portion of a letter signed by Mike Haanen, APWA Alberta Chapter president. “They are what make our communities great places to live and work.”
Council unanimously carried the recommended motion to observe and proclaim the upcoming National Public Works Week in Sundre.
The next proclamation presented to council for consideration was not only for an inaugural celebration of agricultural producers and multi-generational farms, but also an invitation to join a pancake breakfast.
The Aggie Days Mountain View 2022 organizing committee extended to mayor and council an invitation to participate in the first Aggie Days that will be hosted on Saturday, May 14 just outside of Cremona at the Big Red Barn any time between 9 a.m. and noon, and join Mountain View County councillors and community volunteers in serving up flapjacks and sausages. The theme for the inaugural proclamation is Celebrating Agriculture.
“I think it’ll be a great event,” said Mayor Richard Warnock, who plans to be there flipping pancakes.
Following a brief discussion on which members of council might be able to commit to attending, the recommended motion to accept the invitation to participate in the pancake breakfast as well as proclaim May 14 as Thank a Farmer Day in Sundre was unanimously carried.
