Warm weather: High temperature record broken in Sundre area Sunday

Some Alberta locales break April 6 temperature records set more than 100 years ago

SUNDRE – The Sundre area was one of seven places in Alberta to break high temperature records on Sunday.

In a weather summary issued Monday, Environment and Climate Change Canada noted the Sundre area recorded a new, record-high temperature for April 7.

The temperature hit 20.1 degrees Celsius (C) Sunday at the Sundre Airport. The previous record for the day of 18.6 C was set in 1996.

Weather records for the area have been kept since 1993.

The previous day on April 5, the Sundre area tied a record high temperature of 16.1 C set in 1996.

The following other Alberta areas set a daily maximum temperature record on Sunday, April 6:

• Beaverlodge area - New record of 18.6 C. Old record of 18.1 C set in 2006. Records in this area have been kept since 1912.

• Grande Prairie area - New record of 17.9 C. Old record of 16.9 C set in 2006. Records in this area have been kept since 1922.

• Hendrickson Creek area - New record of 18.3 C. Old record of 12.4 C set in 1996. Records in this area have been kept since 1995.

• Nordegg area – New record of 19.0 C. Old record of 18.3 C set in 1930. Records in this area have been kept since 1915.

• Red Earth Creek area – New record of 20.6 C. Old record of 16.3 set in 2005. Records in this area have been kept since 1994.

• Slave Lake area – New record of 19.4 C. Old record of 18.9 C set in 1955. Records in this area have been kept since 1922.

The federal agency notes that these temperature records have been derived from a selection of historical stations in each geographic area that were active during the period of record.
