Lack of Winchell Lake toilet facilities prompts action

Concern raised over environmental contamination

MOUNTAIN VIEW COUNTY – County council has approved the installation of a temporary toilet at Winchell Lake on the municipality’s southwest boundary.

The move came by way of motion at the recent regularly scheduled council meeting.

While the land around Winchell Lake where the majority of recreational activities take place is owned by the province, the county has a disposition for the road, which includes a small parking area.

“Winchell Lake has continued to grow in popularity over the years and the site services are quite primitive. Recently administration has received a complaint from a local resident relative to the lack of toilet facilities on the site which is contributing to environmental contamination,” administration said in a briefing note to council.

The county has received a quote from a local company of $175 a month rental on a portable toilet with weekly service included, members heard.

Councillors also instructed administration to explore options for a permanent outhouse solution for the 2021 season.

Meanwhile, council has given an update on work being done at the county-owned campground north of Water Valley.

In the briefing note to council, administration said a significant amount of flooding of the Little Red Deer River at the site this past spring has created a large amount of silt deposits, piles of trees and some damage to the day use area, campsites and internal roads and gravel pads.

In all, about $13,000 in work will be undertaken, including removal of logs, cleaning up of slit, gravel pad repairs, roadway repairs and culvert repairs.

“The campground and day use area does provide benefit to Cremona and area residents and provides valuable opportunities for business located in both municipalities, due to the large number of campers that it draws to the area,” administration said.

Council accepted the report as information.
